What Types of Printing Inks are Best for Food Packaging?


Do you consider Printing Inks for food packaging safe? Are food packaging companies using toxic chemicals that can leech into your food? 

 

It is a matter of concern because ink contains lead which is obviously not safe to consume. So, which ink can be preferred as food safe? 

 

According to FDA, a food-safe ink can be used in all types of food contact substances because it contains additives that are safe for use. Food contact substances include cardboard, plastics, paper, adhesives, and so forth. If the additive is present on the list of FDA, the conditions for its usage are followed, it's safe to use. In case, the additive is new, there is a need to scientifically prove that it is safe to use. Each ink manufacturer needs to submit a request to FDA for verification when a new additive comes.  

 

Types of Printing Inks For Food Packaging

Electron Beam inkjet inks

 

EB inks can be used for food packaging because it does not require adding photoinitiators. The polymerization process gets complete because of the powerful electron beam. Also, these inks are less expensive and don't need solvents for cleanup which is good for food packaging. 

 

UV inkjet inks

 

In the case of packaging that requires direct food contact, UV ink is not suitable. It uses a type of polymer named oligomers which is not considered food safe. However, UV ink can be used in the case of indirect food contact packaging. Considering corporate reputation and consumer safety, testing can further find out any probable circumstantial risk.  

 

Eco-friendly water-based inkjet ink
